Okay let’s be real for a sec. Figuring out what to wear when you get invited to do something fancy is stressful. You finally score tickets to see live classical music and suddenly your entire closet looks like garbage.
Putting together a cute classical concert outfit is tricky because you want to look elevated but you also don’t want to look like you are trying way too hard. Plus you have to sit still for two hours, so comfort is actually a huge factor. I was texting my cousin back home on the rez about it last night and she was just laughing at me panicking over a dress.
But honestly, it is a big deal! You want to feel confident and beautiful when you step into that fancy hall. So I spent way too much time scrolling Pinterest to find the best inspiration for us.
The Classic Black Slip Look
You seriously can never go wrong with a classic black slip dress. It is just the ultimate symphony outfit because it looks incredibly elegant but it takes zero effort to put on. I love how this pin styles it with some simple gold jewelry and a sleek heel. When I wear my black slip dress I usually throw an oversized blazer over my shoulders just in case the venue has the AC blasting. There is nothing worse than shivering through a beautiful violin solo, trust me.
Staying Warm and Elegant
Winter fashion is always a struggle for me. I swear every time I go to the city in January the wind tries to physically take me out. This pin shows exactly how to layer up without looking like a giant marshmallow. A long wool coat over a dark turtleneck is such a powerful look. You stay super warm on the walk from the parking garage but you still look incredibly chic once you check your coat at the door.
Tailored Trousers and Silk
This OOTD is giving me major boss energy and I am so here for it. You know how a good pair of tailored pants just makes you feel powerful? I actually bought a pair of high waisted trousers like this last fall when my auntie took me to see the ballet. I paired them with a silk cami and pinned this beautiful beaded rosette she made me right onto my lapel. It was the perfect mix of dressed up and authentic to me. You should definitely try mixing your own cultural pieces with tailored basics like this.
Moody Concert Vibes
This moody aesthetic is everything. Going to see a classical performance is the perfect excuse to wear darker, richer tones. I love a good monochromatic dark look.
Leather for the Orchestra?
Okay, hear me out. Leather for classical music might sound a little intense but it actually works so well. A deep winterberry or maroon leather dress is edgy but the silhouette keeps it classical. It is just a really fun way to break the rules a little bit. If you feel like leather is too much for a fancy venue you can always soften it up with a cashmere wrap.
Front Row Ready
This is just the perfect orchestra outfit. A friend of mine scored front row tickets to the philharmonic a few months ago and I literally scrambled for days trying to find something this effortlessly chic. When you are sitting that close to the stage you want to look put together but you also don’t want your clothes to be loud or distracting. Soft fabrics that don’t swish when you move are key.
Date Night Done Right
I went on a date with this guy who took me to see a cello soloist in the city, and figuring out an evening outfit going out that was both romantic and concert-appropriate was so tough. I ended up wearing something super similar to this pin. A sleek skirt with a subtle slit and a really nice fitted top. Of course I ended up spilling a tiny bit of red wine on myself before the show even started, but thankfully it was dark in there! Anyway, this look is absolutely foolproof for a fancy date night.
Jazz Inspired Elegance
I know this pin specifically mentions a jazz concert but the vibe translates perfectly. Velvet pants or a velvet blazer look so rich and beautiful under the dim lights of a concert hall.
Getting Lost in Style
Have you ever been totally lost downtown in heels? Yeah, me too. If you are putting together a symphony outfit orchestra nights usually involve a lot of walking from whatever distant parking lot you actually found a spot in. That is why I love this look. It incorporates a really stylish block heel boot. You get the height and the formal look without destroying your ankles on the pavement. So smart.
The Statement Skirt
Silk midi skirts are basically my love language right now. They look so expensive and they feel like you are wearing pajamas.
Adapting Concert Wear
Okay I know the pin says 1975 concert but you can totally adapt this. Just swap out the heavy combat boots for a sleek pointed-toe bootie and suddenly a casual band tee and blazer becomes an edgy, modern look for a night out at the hall.
Cozy and Cute
We really need to talk about sitting for two hours straight in those tiny velvet chairs. This cute outfit focuses on soft, stretchy fabrics which is exactly what you need. You can look completely gorgeous while still actually being able to breathe.
Old Money Aesthetic with a Twist
The whole old money aesthetic is huge right now, right? Cashmere sweaters, tweed, stuff like that. I actually really love this style for formal events. But I usually mix these preppy looks with some of my own culture.
The Power Suit
Nothing commands respect quite like a full matching suit. This is for the nights you want to show up and have everyone stare at you in the lobby. Just incredible.
Dramatic Outerwear
Walking up those big stone steps of a classical venue in a dramatic coat is a feeling everyone should experience at least once. It just sets the mood for the whole evening.
Main Character Energy
This pin is giving me major main character in Paris energy.
Refining the Club Look
You can absolutely take elements of clubwear and make them work for a highbrow event. A satin corset top paired with wide leg trousers and a blazer is sexy but totally appropriate. It is all about balance!
