Okay, let’s be totally real for a second here. Half the reason I even agreed to try crew this spring was because the aesthetic is just so insanely good. I mean, spending your mornings out on the water is great and all, but looking cute at the boathouse? That is the actual priority here.
I have been doing a massive deep dive into what actually makes a good rowing outfit lately, because showing up in my old oversized college sweatpants just wasn’t cutting it anymore. You want something that screams “I am athletic and dedicated but also I definitely grab a seven dollar iced matcha immediately after this.”
It is honestly such a very specific, cool-girl vibe. I pulled together some of my absolute favorite mood boards and flat lays that I have been saving religiously on my phone.
The Ultimate Morning Flatlay
This flatlay is basically everything I aspire to be on a random Tuesday morning. It is super practical but still looks incredibly put together. You have the essentials like a good tight-fitting top that absolutely will not get caught in the oars, and then some sleek little accessories to tie the whole thing together. Getting dressed at 4:30 AM is honestly a struggle for me. My alarm goes off and I just stare at the ceiling wondering why I do this to myself. Half the time I am just grabbing things in the dark and praying they match. But laying out a cute coordinated set like this the night before actually gives me a tiny bit of motivation to get out from under my warm blankets. Me and my friend usually text each other our outfits the night before to hold ourselves accountable. I feel like if your clothes look this professional, your brain just naturally assumes you are going to have a really productive workout on the water.
Bringing the Pink Aesthetic
Okay, stop literally everything because this pink rowing outfit aesthetic is giving me absolute life right now. I know traditional crew gear is usually navy, crimson, or black and takes itself very seriously, but who says we cannot bring a little Elle Woods energy down to the dock? I bought a neon pink sports bra last summer for my very first time out on the water. I was so incredibly nervous and I ended up catching a crab – which for the non-rowers means my oar literally got stuck in the water and the handle smacked me right in the chest. I was completely mortified and almost fell backward out of my seat in front of everyone. But at least my outfit was serving massive looks while I floundered around in the boat trying to recover my dignity. A bright, happy color just makes waking up at dawn slightly less painful, don’t you think? You just throw on something pink and suddenly you feel like you can conquer the world, or at least a hard sprint.
Sunglasses and Hydration Station
Hydration and sun protection, but make it high fashion. This pin gets it exactly right. You absolutely need a pair of shades that will not fly off your face the second the wind picks up on the river. I learned this the very hard way last month. I was wearing these cheap, cute little cat-eye sunglasses and a massive gust of wind just took them straight into the water. They sank immediately into the murky depths. Now I only wear sporty frames that actually grip my head securely. Plus, seeing the water bottle in this layout is such a good visual cue. You get so incredibly thirsty out there, but you have to bring something that fits perfectly in the bottom of the shell without rolling around and driving everyone in the boat crazy. It is all about finding that perfect balance between looking cute and being actually functional.
Vintage Blue Swimsuit Vibes
This is giving major vintage athletic vibes and I am so entirely here for it. Sometimes the best gear for water sports is actually just a really well-made, structured swimsuit or a classic unisuit. You want something that moves seamlessly with your body and does not ride up in weird places when you are sliding back and forth on those tiny little seats. I love this deep blue color so much. Being Native, I have always loved rich jewel tones against my skin, and this nautical navy just hits different for me. You can easily throw a pair of loose athletic shorts over a piece like this when you are on land carrying the heavy boat, and then just strip them off when it is time to launch. It is such an effortless way to do a rowing outfit without overthinking all the separate pieces.
The Clean and Minimal Layout
I love how clean and beautifully minimal this layout is. A classic athletic aesthetic really just comes down to fit and fabric at the end of the day. You need breathable materials that dry quickly because you will definitely get splashed by the person sitting in front of you. Honestly, finding the perfect pair of compression shorts is like finding the holy grail of activewear. There’s so many bad ones out there. Once you find a brand that does not squeeze your thighs too hard but still stays up perfectly around your waist, you basically have to buy them in every single color they make. I finally found my holy grail pair after trying on literally twenty different brands, and I refuse to wear anything else now. When you are comfortable, you just perform so much better.
Headbands Are Literal Lifesavers
We seriously need to talk about headbands for a minute. They are entirely non-negotiable on the water. When you have both hands glued to the oars, you cannot be swatting stray hairs out of your eyes every five seconds. This collage has some really cute options that do not look like you just stole them from a retro aerobics video. I have incredibly thick, heavy dark hair, so finding a headband that actually stays put when I am sweating is a literal nightmare. I have a whole dedicated collection of thick, non-slip headbands now. Me and my best friend always go to the gym together, and she always conveniently forgets hers and steals mine. I have literally started hiding the really expensive ones in my car console where she cannot find them. A girl has to protect her good gear, you know?
The Holy Grail Unisuit
This layout is just so deeply satisfying to look at. A good unisuit or one-piece is basically the unofficial uniform of the sport. I know they look super intimidating when you see them on the hanger, but they are actually amazing. It just makes getting dressed in the pitch black of early morning so much easier. You literally only have to put on one single item of clothing and you are instantly ready to go. No matching tops and bottoms, no worrying about your shirt riding up and exposing your stomach while you row. It is just sleek, simple, and gets the job done perfectly. I bought my first one online and was so scared to try it on, but it actually made me feel like a legitimate athlete the second I zipped it up.
It Is All About The Little Details
Accessories can totally make or break your entire time on the water. Good socks are actually super important because your feet are strapped into those weird little shoes that are permanently bolted into the boat. They are shared shoes, which is kind of gross if you think about it too much, so you definitely want something thick that prevents nasty blisters on your heels.
The Complete Gear Ecosystem
This pin shows exactly how many little things you actually need for a solid practice session. It is not just about the clothes, it is about the entire gear ecosystem. You need your water bottle, a visor to block the glare, and maybe some grip tape for your hands if you are super hardcore. I tried going without athletic tape once and my hands looked like I had been bare-knuckle wrestling a bear by the time we finally got back to the dock. Not cute at all. Now I never leave the house without some kind of hand protection tucked into my bag. It just adds to the whole rugged but stylish rowing outfit vibe I am going for.
The Early Morning Dock Vibe
This picture captures the exact vibe of hanging out at the boathouse right before the sun even comes up. It is freezing cold, you are clutching your gear trying to stay warm, but you also feel kind of like a total badass just for being awake. Layering is so crucially important here. You need a lightweight, waterproof jacket that you can easily peel off and stuff under your seat once you start sweating. I found this amazing vintage 90s windbreaker at a thrift store last month and it has become my absolute go-to for chilly morning sessions. It gives the whole look a very cool, retro street-style edge that I am completely obsessed with.
The Complete Lifestyle Board
This mood board is completely perfect because it shows the whole entire lifestyle, not just the sweaty workout part. The clothes have to transition from the boat directly to the coffee shop seamlessly. You want to look athletic but also extremely approachable and stylish. I always try to pick pieces that I would not be absolutely mortified to be seen in while waiting in line for my post-workout iced latte. I actually ran into my ex at the coffee shop right after practice once, and thank god I was wearing a really cute coordinated set instead of my raggedy old sleep shirt. It is all about blurring the lines between pure athletic wear and casual everyday streetwear.
Ocean Side Aesthetic Goals
I am ending with this one because it is just pure aesthetic goals. The matching set, the cool sunglasses, just standing by the water looking completely unbothered and fabulous. This is exactly the ultimate energy I am trying to channel this entire season. Whether you are actually joining a competitive crew team or you are just hitting the rowing machine at your local gym to get some cardio in, you deserve to look this incredibly good while doing it. It just makes the whole experience so much more fun and motivating.
