Looking for staircase ideas for small spaces that leave room for more than steps? Think tucked-away shelves, narrow spirals and even a little desk underneath.
These pictures include compact layouts plus storage and decorating details you can borrow for an existing staircase.
You can keep things simple or go all out with color. Treat these as inspiration rather than building plans, though.
A qualified stair designer should check dimensions, headroom, handrails and local safety requirements, especially for the steep or open designs.
Small-space staircase inspiration worth saving
pale steps and a textured wall
We’re starting off strong with this pretty pale staircase tucked into a wall opening. I love how the tan, uneven wall shows through the gaps between the steps.
The rounded planter is a lovely finishing touch. If you want a similar look, keep your greenery beside the stairs rather than on the treads.
a spiral with a curved rail
How gorgeous is that sweeping handrail? The brown steps curl around a central post, with thin black uprights following the outside edge.
The curved ceiling opening is worth noticing too. Bring this picture to your designer if you like the idea of a staircase that turns within one concentrated area.
black sides and pale handrails
If you’re looking for a simple color combination, this one is for you. The steep, narrow flight pairs black side supports with pale steps and matching handrails.
I especially like the little botanical pictures alongside it.
shelves beneath the slope
I am obsessed with this under-stair display. The shelves follow the sloping underside of the stairs, with books, vases and a lamp filling the different-height openings.
The white cabinets below have little window-like fronts. Try a similar mix of display shelves and cabinets if you like having your favorite pieces on show.
a white ladder-style flight
This is another pretty way to work shelving into a staircase. The white ladder-style flight has open compartments beside it and paneled storage fronts at the bottom.
I’d keep the shelves lightly decorated so you can still see that unusual triangular outline.
clear panels and little wall lights
Don’t want a row of spindles? This staircase gives you a different look with clear side panels and small square lights along the wall.

The brown treads and white risers keep the colors simple. Those little pools of light are my favorite detail here.
a bookshelf along the wall
Book lovers, how cute is this? A long ladder-shaped shelf follows the slope of the stairs, with books tucked between its dividers.
I love the pale framed pictures above it. If you borrow the bookshelf idea, have its depth and placement checked so it leaves the stairway and handrail access clear.
dark brown corner steps
This compact-looking staircase has such an unusual shape. The lower rectangular steps lead into wedge-shaped steps that turn around a tall central post.
The dark brown tones repeat in the sliding door and window trim. That matching color palette is a detail you can borrow without copying the stair construction.
pale steps and a forest print
This is a similar turning layout to the one above, but the lighter steps give it a different look. I love the framed forest scene tucked between the staircase and the sliding door.
Try one narrow picture on the neighboring wall if you want a little decoration without adding furniture at the bottom.
a tucked-away desk
Need somewhere for a small desk? This under-stair setup is worth saving.
The desktop sits below shelves that follow the slope, with a taller bookcase on the right.
The lamp and slim light beneath the shelf are lovely additions. Keep those in your plans if you’re turning an unused recess into a work area.
white spindles and a turning flight
I love this white staircase with its pale brown treads and matching handrail. The flight turns beside a tall window, while a large square post marks the bottom.
Don’t want lots of hallway decor? A single plant beside the stairs gives you a little color without covering the walls.
a screen of tall brown slats
If you like repeating details, this one is for you. Tall brown slats run from the stair edge to the beam above, with glimpses of the turning steps between them.
The white risers make each brown tread easy to pick out.

lit shelves and a shoe drawer
There is so much to love here, but that long shoe drawer might be my favorite part. Above it, pale cabinets sit alongside glowing display shelves and a bottle rack behind clear doors.
You don’t have to include every feature. Choose the storage you actually need, then borrow the little shelf lights if you want a similar look.
black outlines and clear sides
This staircase may just be a favorite if you love black accents. Black stair sides frame the pale brown treads, while clear panels sit inside black railings.

The flight changes direction at a landing beside the window. I’d keep the surrounding walls simple like these.
a narrow turn above the hallway
Working with an awkward hallway? This picture shows a very narrow flight rising between doorways before turning through the ceiling opening.
The pale steps stand out against the gray wall behind them.
It’s a layout to discuss with a professional rather than copy directly, particularly with those nearby doors and steep steps.
a bench beneath the stairs
How sweet is this little sitting area? A long bench fills the space under the stairs, with drawers below and slim white shelves above.
I especially love the mix of patterned and plain cushions. Add a few favorite books to your own version if you want a spot to sit and read.
floating-look steps by a tall window
I am obsessed with the open look of these steps. The thick rectangular treads turn beside a tall window, with clear panels along the exposed edge.
This room is more generous than a tiny hallway, so save it for the visual details rather than its footprint. The pale colors and uncluttered backdrop are lovely ideas to borrow.
an arched nook for your dog
Okay, that dog is adorable, but the arched nook deserves some attention too! A cushioned platform sits beneath a small shelf, with two open drawers holding bowls, toys and supplies.
If you’re planning a pet nook, this is a cute way to give everyday pet items their own place instead of another freestanding cabinet.
a tight spiral with shiny supports
Here’s another spiral with a very different finish. Brown wedge-shaped treads wrap around a shiny central column, with slim silver-colored connectors between the steps.
The plain walls leave the stair shape on show. I’d skip extra floor decorations in a narrow stair area like this.
a red runner and ornate trim
Last but definitely not least, we have this colorful narrow hallway. I love the red-and-cream patterned runner!
The pale staircase sits beneath ornate white trim, with framed pictures climbing the wall beside it.

Try a bold runner if your existing stairs need color rather than a new layout. The green console and yellow-accented lamps offer even more inspiration.
