20 Shed Conversion Ideas for Work, Hobbies and Garden Hangouts

Looking for shed conversion ideas that go beyond somewhere to stash your garden tools? Think a desk overlooking the garden, a little painting studio or a reading room lined with books.

There’s plenty to work with here, whether you love simple shelves or floral curtains.

You can keep the decorating simple or go all out. Start with how you want to use the room, then pick your favorite details.

For structural changes, utilities or sleeping spaces, check local requirements before making plans.

Shed spaces worth saving

a desk with a garden view

We’re starting off strong with this lovely little office. I love the desk beneath the window and the patterned cushion on the chair beside the doors.

Try a basket under your desk for books, like the one here. It leaves room on top for a lamp and a little greenery.

pink flowers and pretty curtains

How cute is this sitting room? The pink floral seat, pale cushions and white patterned curtains are so pretty together. Even the little cabinet has a floral detail.

If you want to follow this look, try a mix of small framed pictures and mirrors above your seating.

a loft above the desk

This little loft may just be one of my favorite layouts here. There’s a desk beneath the raised bed, plus another cushioned nook alongside it.

The long floral curtain is such a pretty detail.

If you try this layout, get the loft structure, access and guarding properly planned first.

a narrow workout room

Want a space just for your workouts? This room has a rack along one wall, a bench on the other and an exercise bike at the back.

The green and blue weight plates bring a little color to the white walls.

Before choosing equipment, check floor capacity and the clearances each piece needs.

plants and potting benches

I am obsessed with all the little shelves in this garden workspace. Potted plants line the windows while tools hang beside the back bench.

Try open storage underneath your worktop for trays and boxes. The leaning plant stand on the left is another detail worth saving.

a white garden bar

How lovely is this little bar? The white counter and dark stools keep the colors simple, with bottles displayed on shelves behind them.

I especially love the strings of lights above the counter and across the garden. Choose outdoor-rated lighting if you’re planning something similar.

easels by the windows

If you’ve been wanting a room for painting, this one is for you. Easels stand near the windows while colorful artwork fills the walls. That orange-and-blue rug is gorgeous.

Keep your paint collection on shallow shelves like these so you can see the colors without digging through boxes.

books and a window seat

Who wouldn’t want to pick out a book here? Tall shelves fill the left wall, with a cushioned window seat tucked into the back.

I love the red cushion among the gray and checked ones. Try that little touch of color if you want to keep the rest of your reading nook simple.

a pastel play café

OMG, how adorable is this pretend café? The little register, toy cakes and pastel teacups are just too cute.

The blue counter sits opposite a narrow shelf with yellow and green stools. Add a small menu board to your own play space if you want to carry the café theme through.

an open yoga space

Don’t want to fill your shed with furniture? No problem! This yoga space keeps the middle open, with blue and green mats spread across the floor.

The pale green door and plants are my favorite details. Try a low bench along the wall for gathering your towels and props.

craft shelves and a chandelier

This is a pretty way to give your craft supplies their own room. Narrow white shelves hold small jars while a long worktable runs down the right side.

I love that the chandelier makes an appearance too. You don’t have to skip decorative details just because it’s a workspace.

a colorful poolside shed

The turquoise and pink touches are so cute here. Open doors reveal shelves and a striped curtain, with loungers set out beside the pool.

If you’re planning poolside storage, try hooks for towels and separate shelves for your swim accessories. Keep the bright colors going with a patterned curtain like this one.

black siding and open doors

I am in love with this black exterior. Through the open glazed doors, you can see a dark sofa, pale cushions and little ceiling lights.

You don’t need a huge room to borrow the look. Start with a small seating area and let the doorway frame it.

guitars and a piano corner

Calling all music lovers, this room has so much to save. Guitars hang across the back wall, with a piano on the right and a keyboard tucked beside it.

The patterned cushions and red rug are lovely too. Try a similar mix of patterns if you want to give your music room a little more color.

a book-lined fireside nook

This is another reading room I love. The pale blue sofa sits beside a window, with books filling the shelves around the black stove.

The floral cushions are worth borrowing even without the fire. If you want a stove, have a qualified installer assess ventilation, the flue and required clearances rather than copying the pictured spacing.

a pottery wheel and open shelves

If you are looking for pottery studio inspiration, this one is for you. Open shelves surround an ornate mirror, with a wheel and tool containers below.

My favorite part is the row of plants along the top. Leave some of your lower shelves clear for pieces in progress instead of filling every spot with decoration.

a pink dog grooming station

That pink grooming tub definitely stands out! A grooming table sits alongside it, with a small pink pet bed near the wall.

This gives you a different way to think about a shed conversion. Plan suitable plumbing, drainage, ventilation and safe electrical installation before bringing in washing equipment.

a backyard sports bar

The sports fans are going to find plenty of inspiration here. There’s a screen above the blue bar, bright red stools and a snack table outside.

I love how the seating continues into the garden. Try a similar indoor-outdoor arrangement if you want more room to gather, with suitable weather protection for electrical equipment.

a little front deck

Don’t want to overlook the outside of your shed? This little deck is worth saving.

Two chairs sit beside the double doors, with a hanging planter and potted greenery nearby.

The interior isn’t visible here, but the entrance gives you a lovely starting point for a garden retreat.

striped curtains and dish shelves

Last but definitely not least, we have this serving space. I love the striped curtains beneath the long counter!

Stacks of dishes sit on the shelf above, with hanging baskets nearby and little vases on the counter.

Try a curtained storage area if you’d rather hide your supplies than add more cabinet doors.
