20 Landscaping Along Fence Ideas With Flowers, Greenery and Garden Lights

Looking for landscaping along fence ideas that give your yard a little more color? Think pink roses, rows of rounded shrubs or a narrow border with little garden lights.

These pictures offer plenty to borrow, though the first shows a house-side bed rather than a fence.

You can keep things simple or go all out with flowers. Start with the space you have, then choose plants suited to your sunlight and climate.

I especially love the climbing roses and the borders with winding edges.

Fence-line garden ideas worth saving

pink blue and white hydrangeas

How pretty are these hydrangeas? The blue, pink and white flower heads fill a long bed beside gray house siding. This photo isn’t a fence planting, but that colorful row is still lovely border inspiration.

For a fence-side variation, try a similar grouping of flowering shrubs with a clear lawn edge.

slender trees and a curved border

This border may just be one of my favorites here. I love the slender trees against the white fence and the little blue-gray grass clumps along the front.

Try repeating a few plant shapes down your own border rather than choosing something different for every spot. The broad green leaves and taller golden grasses give you plenty of ideas.

pink flowers on tall lattice

I am obsessed with this tall lattice panel. The pink flowers reach well above the fence, with more blooms tucked into the narrow bed below.

If you want to go a little further, add a flowerpot beside the border like the one here. I’d keep those small white flowers for a simple finishing touch.

a winding rock border

Don’t want flowers to be the only detail in your border? Try a winding strip of pale pebbles and larger rocks like this one.

Small shrubs and spiky green plants sit in the dark bed beside it.

The irregular edge is my favorite part. Borrow that winding shape for a decorative rock feature in your own yard.

a full cottage-style border

Look at all those flowers in the lower picture! Tall pink, white and blue spikes rise above broad leaves, with climbing blooms spreading across the fence.

The paired images show a sparse border above and a much fuller one below. If you love this look, start by choosing a few taller flowers for the back of your own bed.

rounded shrubs and pink blossoms

If you like larger groups of color, this one is for you. Rounded flowering shrubs line the fence beneath a pink-blossomed tree and a leafy green tree.

I love the white flowers beside the deeper red ones. Keep that alternating color idea in mind when choosing shrubs for your yard.

purple flowers beside open posts

Who says you need a solid privacy fence? Young leafy trees stand alongside this open row of posts, with a thick sweep of purple flowers on the lawn side.

The yellow-green foliage at the front is such a pretty extra touch. I’d borrow that pairing if purple is your favorite garden color.

a narrow bed with little lights

Don’t want to go all out and fill a wide border? This narrow bed gives you a simpler idea.

The lower image shows spaced green plants, purple flower spikes and small black lights along the fence.

Little rings of pale stones surround the lights. That’s a cute detail to borrow without adding more plants.

white blooms and purple spikes

I love this mix of white flower clusters, pink coneflowers and tall purple spikes. The cream-edged leaves at the front are just as pretty as the blooms.

Try a low row of edging blocks if you want a clearly marked boundary between your planting bed and lawn.

pale flowers against gray

This is such a lovely way to pair a gray fence with greenery. Pale blooms fill the near side of the bed, with blue flowers farther along and rounded shrubs around the corner.

There’s still plenty of fence showing behind the plants. You don’t have to cover every panel to make the border look pretty.

rose-covered garden frames

How gorgeous are these climbing roses? Tall brown frames stand in front of the black fence, with pale pink and deeper pink blooms reaching up the grids.

The purple globe-shaped flowers below are another favorite. If you’re planning something similar, try repeating the frames while varying the flower colors.

round shrubs and white pebbles

If you’re looking for a border without lots of different flowers, go with this idea. Rounded green shrubs sit in a straight strip of white pebbles, with black garden lights between them.

I love the narrow reddish edging along the lawn. It gives this simple planting a neat little finish.

a glowing evening border

The lights are my favorite part of this fence line. Their amber glow reaches up the pale panels, with small plants spaced through the narrow bed below.

Try a similar lighting layout if you want to enjoy your border after sunset. You can keep the planting simple like this.

spiky plants and bright flowers

If you are looking for lots of different shapes, then this one is for you. There are pointed blue-gray rosettes, upright cactus-like forms and clusters of orange, pink and purple flowers.

I love the pale stepping stones following the edge of the lawn. Borrow the color mix, but check which plants will suit your local growing conditions before copying the planting.

pink roses by a white fence

I am obsessed with these pink roses. They look so pretty beside the purple flower spikes and little yellow blooms, especially with that white fence behind them.

Keep the loose rock edging if you want to follow this look. The mix of larger rounded rocks and smaller pebbles is a lovely detail.

pale plumes and black lanterns

Don’t want a border filled with bright flower colors? No problem!

These arching grass clumps and pale plumes look beautiful beneath the row of black lanterns.

The curved paved edge follows the planting all the way down. I’d keep that gentle curve rather than making everything perfectly straight.

hanging strawberry baskets

How cute is this hanging strawberry basket? Red fruit and tiny white flowers spill around the sides, with more hanging pots farther down the fence.

This gives you another place to add plants above the bed. If you try it, use supports rated for the weight of a watered basket.

small shrubs in a dark border

If you like keeping things simple, save this one. Small green shrubs are spaced across a dark ground-covered bed beside the golden-toned fence.

You don’t need to fill every gap right away. Choose your spacing around the mature size of the plants rather than how small they look when you bring them home.

a raised bed and string lights

This is one of my favorite little garden spaces on the list. I love the tall blue flowers, purple hydrangeas and yellow blooms tucked into the long raised bed.

String lights hang along the fence beside a small birdhouse. Don’t forget the stepping-stone path if you’re borrowing the layout for a narrow yard.

flowering trees and colorful pots

Last but definitely not least, we have this colorful border around a lawn seating area. Pink-flowering trees rise above red and orange blooms, with turquoise pots tucked into the front.

I especially love the curved bed and the pale green flower clusters in the far corner. Try adding a colorful pot to your existing border if you only want one small change.
